Wentworth Hunter Pace - June 6, 2021

After Margaret and I had such a fun time at the fall hunter pace, we opted to go again this spring! This time, while I rode Rejoice again, Margaret rode her horse Jester and had a friend ride Ladyhawke. All Kennebec Morgans!! Jester and Rejoice have the same dam and Jester and Lady share the same sire. Unfortunately instead of a lovely late spring day, we had one of the first intensely hot and humid days of the year. It was definitely a bummer, but the ride was mostly in the shade of the woods and we had a great time!  most of the fences were 3' coops but we found a small log and this hay to jump haha Until we didn't. 😑 We brought along a third friend who rode Margaret's older mare, Ladyhawke. She's a good rider but hasn't known Ladyhawke for very long and didn't realize how much of a cranky boss mare she could be at times. She kicked Jester right in the front leg just about halfway through the ride, and while the cut itself ended up not being a big deal in the

Ahhhh! So many ribbons!

I have no problem admitting I love horse show ribbons.  I am a ribbon ho, yet I won't do anything illegal or immoral to win them.  I won't cheat or hurt my horse to win them.  But my competitive streak is a mile long, and I work my butt off at home and in lessons to do well in the show ring.

That said, I have won my fair share of ribbons since I started showing in 1989.

This is my tack room, full of horse show ribbons......

And this is my office, full of year end ribbons......

I know, horrid pic.  Tried to get the entire thing.  :-(
That lonely third place ribbon (about the middle) is from a USDF show where Dreamy earned a 68%.  It is one of the ribbons I am most proud of!!
It is getting to the point where I just don't have the space for them all.  It stinks, because I love them!  And I am the type of person who cannot just put them away in a box.  They represent hard work and effort; a few times this year I have declined to take a ribbon but that is hard for me!  First I feel like I am being rude to the show personnel and second I feel like I earned it, so I might as well keep it!  And I know I could donate them, but I think I am too attached.

I want to have a ribbon quilt made and maybe even some of the cute pillows.  But then I start thinking...do I cut up the ones that mean the most to me?  Or do I cut up the "less important" ones?  If I am going to spend hundreds of dollars and cut up my ribbons (!!!!), I want to be happy in my choice.  But I cannot decide.

Anyway, in an effort to make room for 2012 year end awards, I decided to take down the fourth, fifth, and sixth place year end ribbons and make something.  I cut off the long ribbon part and arranged the rosettes on a foam circle thing I purchased at a craft store.  I just hot glued them on.  I had one lonely fourth place ribbon left over, but oh well.  LOL!  I am sure there will be another project for it someday.  I hung it up in the office and not only does it help save space, I think it is kind of cute!  I would rather put it in my barn, but I am not sure how the damp and cold fall weather would affect it.

Any other ideas on what to do with them?

  1. Drooool. A fellow ribbon ho, I am in love with your tack room and office.

I quite like the ribbon quilts....could you use less important ribbons for the bulk of the quilt, and just a few meaningful ones for the main rosettes/ornamentations?

  2. wow -that is a lot of ribbons! I suspected you had many, many ribbons, but not that many! lol

I think you could do a quilt, some pillows and still not make a dent in them!

How about a picture frame: http://www.squidoo.com/horseshowribbons-pictureframe

And this site has tonnes of cool ideas, but you probably know about it... http://www.distinctivedesignsbydiana.com/horseshowribbonq.html

    Good luck!!

  3. I rolled up my ribbons under the rosettes and then placed them in a decorative jar!

  4. Ahh your house and barn look like mine! I am a ribbon ho as well and have started running out of room to put them! I left some of my old 4-H ribbons from when I was little hanging in the tack room at my old barn, just to try and make some more room (plus they got really dirty and gross from hanging exposed for so long) but I still have so many! I too am having a very difficult time getting the courage up to cut them to make a ribbon quilt.

  5. (struggling with a little jealousy)

I won some ribbons as a young rider only to have them thrown out while I was away at college. Showing isn't realistic now as we live in the hinterlands...

You've got lots to work with - and it would make sense to display them in a creative and useful way - looking forward to seeing the finished product!

  7. You know I love my ribbons too! Since I didn't get to start showing until 2001 and couldn't show a lot I have a long way to go before I have your problem! I love the ribbon wreath! And I am not sure if you saved the rest of the ribbon, but I have been eyeballing this woman's etsy site for a while because she is only $50 for a custom pillow....http://www.etsy.com/listing/106033436/equestrian-pillow-made-with-your-own

  8. I like the ribbon wreath you made. You could customize the colors for the different seasons (eg pink/white/red for Valentine's Day, green/white for St. Patrick's Day, etc). I have also seen "ribbon cubes" which are basically an end table, nightstand, or coffee table that is a clear acrylic box with a wooden frame and a hinged top. The idea is that you drop your ribbons in there to create a free-form display out of a useful object. I have toyed with trying to build one of my own since the commercial ones are pretty pricey.
