Wentworth Hunter Pace - June 6, 2021

After Margaret and I had such a fun time at the fall hunter pace, we opted to go again this spring! This time, while I rode Rejoice again, Margaret rode her horse Jester and had a friend ride Ladyhawke. All Kennebec Morgans!! Jester and Rejoice have the same dam and Jester and Lady share the same sire. Unfortunately instead of a lovely late spring day, we had one of the first intensely hot and humid days of the year. It was definitely a bummer, but the ride was mostly in the shade of the woods and we had a great time!  most of the fences were 3' coops but we found a small log and this hay to jump haha Until we didn't. 😑 We brought along a third friend who rode Margaret's older mare, Ladyhawke. She's a good rider but hasn't known Ladyhawke for very long and didn't realize how much of a cranky boss mare she could be at times. She kicked Jester right in the front leg just about halfway through the ride, and while the cut itself ended up not being a big deal in the...

Day One: 30 Day Challenge

So, it's March and I need some inspiration to get me through one of the toughest months here in Maine!  LOL!  I have Facebook friends who I have seen do a 30 day challenge with pics, but I don't really want to do this on Facebook.  I am going to try my best to post every day for the month!  (OK, so yeah, there are 31 days in March....whatever!  LOL!!!)

Day One:  A picture of you and your horse

Well, this one is easy!  :-)

First up is Revenue Stream, nicknamed Reva.  She is a 2006 Standardbred mare who I have owned since July 5, 2009.  Reva never raced or even qualified as she was unable to train down past 2:20.  She was given to me by Carter Duer of Peninsula Farm (as in I am listed as owner on her papers!).  This is a photo of us cantering along during a clinic last summer with Chris Lombard

Next is Dreamy Starlet, a 1991 Standardbred mare.  Dreamy is a retired race horse and broodmare who started out as a free lease in 2003 and was given to me in 2006 by Jack McGee, a STB owner here in Maine.  We arranged it so the transfer of ownership on her papers was on Dec. 25, so she is my Christmas horse!  Dreamy and I have achieved so many things together, which is made more sweet by the fact that I have done all her training myself (as an adult amateur, though I do take lessons from a fabulous instructor named Judy) and the fact that I never began Dreamy's training until she was 15!  We have won tons of awards and are the poster children for Standardbred Versatility; she competes in dressage, eventing, hunters, western, trail, games, in-hand, roadster under saddle, and even marshals races at local racetracks!  This is a photo of us during the first of four breed demonstrations at the World Equestrian Games in 2010!

And last, but certainly NOT least, is Joydale Sparklerslas, nicknamed Sparky.  She is a 1982 Morgan mare and I have owned her since 1993 (I was 13 and she was 10!).  Sparky was my first horse and she is the best first horse a girl could ever own.  She was originally bred by the people I rode with as a kid (Joydale Morgan Farm) but was sold before I started riding there.  She ended up in a bad situation and we found her for sale after we had been looking for almost two years for a fancy dressage/jumping Morgan for me.  My mother called her my "diamond in the rough" way back when and she was absolutely correct.  I love this horse more than I love most people.....ha ha ha ha.  She has been there for me through all of life's struggles.  We have done everything together from hunters, dressage, eventing, trail, games, in-hand, pleasure driving, and combined driving events.  I began driving her when she was 19 years old and her hocks were unable to continue our jumping (eventing) career.  Instead of getting a new younger horse, I switched disciplines!  Sparky LOVED to drive!!!  This photo is from the marathon phase in 2003 at one of the last full CDEs we competed in...she was 21 years old.  The veterinarian at the end of the marathon told me I had the best conditioned horse there...and she was also the oldest!

  1. Sounds like fun, can't wait for more!
It was also nice to hear more about Sparky. Up until today, I knew very little about her.

  3. Carter is such a nice guy.

And Sparky is beautiful. She sounds like a once in a life time horse.
