Wentworth Hunter Pace - June 6, 2021

After Margaret and I had such a fun time at the fall hunter pace, we opted to go again this spring! This time, while I rode Rejoice again, Margaret rode her horse Jester and had a friend ride Ladyhawke. All Kennebec Morgans!! Jester and Rejoice have the same dam and Jester and Lady share the same sire. Unfortunately instead of a lovely late spring day, we had one of the first intensely hot and humid days of the year. It was definitely a bummer, but the ride was mostly in the shade of the woods and we had a great time!  most of the fences were 3' coops but we found a small log and this hay to jump haha Until we didn't. 😑 We brought along a third friend who rode Margaret's older mare, Ladyhawke. She's a good rider but hasn't known Ladyhawke for very long and didn't realize how much of a cranky boss mare she could be at times. She kicked Jester right in the front leg just about halfway through the ride, and while the cut itself ended up not being a big deal in the...

SMDA Recognized Show - July 14, 2019

Ellie and I tried her first recognized show in July.  It was quite an interesting experience; I don't know why this has been such a weird year, but sadly it has! I signed up to ride Training 2 and 3, paying the little extra to have T3 count as a qualifying score.  It didn't really matter since we cannot do enough rated shows this year to qualify for a USDF award, as I want to do horse trials and other things on weekends when the rated shows are scheduled.  But I wanted it to "count" just in case because you never know lol! I didn't get any media as I went by myself.  Training 2 went great!  Ellie warmed up well and we had a really solid test.  She was calm and rideable, and I honestly thought we had done quite well!  The judge didn't agree and we scored a 62.241%, for third in a class of five.  Not a terrible score, but it seemed lower than the performance.  I figured it was just a difference between normally doing schooling shows and thi...

State of Maine Dressage Schooling Show - May 19, 2019

Ellie and I had our first official dressage show outing (besides the rally  obviously!) two weekends ago.  I felt fairly confident about the show, having knocked off the rust at the rally and having had a really good lesson the day before the show.  I just wanted to have two smooth tests and get our canter leads correctly.   I am super proud of how well Ellie behaves at shows now, except for her behavior while being tied to the trailer. Uggg. She has always been needy and prone to paw, but for some reason, she has suddenly decided the trailer itself is scary.  She will load and unload just fine, and she rides quietly; however, she has started to do that weird snort they do when they are spooked the entire time she is tied up.  She barely ate any hay and she couldn't stop moving.  It wasn't anywhere near explosive or horrible, but it was annoying and worrisome.  I don't want her to sit back and break her halter (she did that once at a les...

Life's A Ride Dressage Schooling Show - June 30, 2018

Our first four shows of the year were excellent!  We were lucky to show at our lesson barn twice and the local GMO show grounds twice, for a total of eight first place finishes.  However, I knew it was time to try a bigger and busier venue, which is what led me to enter the schooling show at Life's A Ride Equestrian Center .  This show also gave us scores towards qualifying for Maine Dressage Society (MDS), Western Maine Dressage Association (WMDA), and State of Maine Dressage Association (SMDA) year end awards, so it was a triple bonus haha.  We are now fully qualified for MDS and WMDA shows, with just one show needed to finish qualifying for SMDA.   sorry for the crappy screen shots Originally I had signed up for the Pre Elementary 2-phase division, because besides the dressage classes they had PE through Training level 2-phases listed in the omnibus.  It is the perfect division for Ellie consisting of Intro B and crossrails.  Sadly, when...

State of Maine Dressage Schooling Show - June 10, 2018

Off we went to our third show of the year this past Sunday.  I was MUCH LESS nervous than the first SMDA show back in May, because I felt much more confident in Ellie's ability to act like a big girl haha.  She turned six the day beforehand, so obviously she's gotta grow up now!  ;-) unicorn birthday cookies for the unicorn Instead of arriving two hours ahead of our first ride time, I opted to get there with just over an hour.  I checked in and we took a quick walk around the show grounds.  Ellie was perfectly calm and happy, so I tied her to the trailer and spent time brushing and tacking her up.  She warmed up easily and didn't act nervous at all, which was really great.  She definitely seemed to remember being there before and went right to work without worrying about a thing.  Intro B is an easy test for us, but it is the perfect warm up test right now.  The nine movements earned us all 7s, one 7.5 for a walk to trot transition, an...

State of Maine Dressage Schooling Show - May 20, 2018

Truth be told, I was a bit nervous about taking Ellie out to our second show of the year this past Sunday.  I personally have shown at this venue innumerable times over the past 29 years and with this specific GMO since 2003, but Ellie can be a bit "excitable" about new places haha.  It's a catch 22 because the only way a young horse is going to be calm and settled in new places is to actually take them to new places and work through the nerves. Our first ride time was 9:15 but we arrived by 7:15.  My husband offered to come with me, but I assured him he should just come for my rides (just to be safe haha), so he and our two year old came over later on in the car.  I figured by arriving so early I would have plenty of time to walk her around the grounds, take her into the ring to walk around the outside of the dressage ring, and to lunge her.  I fully expected her to come off the trailer with her tail high over her back like she did this spring at our fir...

2016 Show Season and Year End Awards Recap

When I considered what I wanted to do with Snap Dancer about a year ago, I figured just getting out to a few shows would be a success.  I had no idea how she would take to a new career of "show horse" and honestly I was nervous about the both of us taking the previous year off completely because of my January - September 2015 pregnancy.   We started at a local fun day , just to see what the mare thought of the little dressage ring.  I felt pleased with her yet discouraged by my severe lack of core muscles (thanks baby human haha). First outing in 2016 Our first dressage show felt like a fluke. First dressage show - two great scores and a high point rider award! But each time we competed, I felt her grow more confident and rideable.   Bravest 2-phase in August!  No spooking! First 3-phase in October and she was super! Snap Dancer's first year of showing ended up being a fairy tale. I know that sounds silly in a way, and we only com...

State of Maine Dressage Association Show - August 21, 2016

Coming off last weekend's strong showing at Scarlet Day Farm , Snappy and I headed to another SMDA show at the Hollis Equestrian Park.  We did the May and June shows there, so I knew she would be comfortable at the venue.  Snappy was great yet again, earning two more blues for her growing collection.   Intro A - 1st place out of 4 with a 67.813% Intro B - 1st place out of 5 with a 68.438% The tests were obedient and accurate.  I really want to clean things up enough to move up to Intro C and Training 1 next year, but time will tell.  It is tough to have a time frame in the back of your head because horses progress at their own pace.  And I am certainly no professional trainer, so it takes me double the time to teach my horses anything LOL! I am still extremely pleased with this mare, but I will honestly say that I just wanted to break 70% again and would have been happy to come in dead last at this show in order to do so LOL! It's not about...
