Wentworth Hunter Pace - June 6, 2021

After Margaret and I had such a fun time at the fall hunter pace, we opted to go again this spring! This time, while I rode Rejoice again, Margaret rode her horse Jester and had a friend ride Ladyhawke. All Kennebec Morgans!! Jester and Rejoice have the same dam and Jester and Lady share the same sire. Unfortunately instead of a lovely late spring day, we had one of the first intensely hot and humid days of the year. It was definitely a bummer, but the ride was mostly in the shade of the woods and we had a great time!  most of the fences were 3' coops but we found a small log and this hay to jump haha Until we didn't. 😑 We brought along a third friend who rode Margaret's older mare, Ladyhawke. She's a good rider but hasn't known Ladyhawke for very long and didn't realize how much of a cranky boss mare she could be at times. She kicked Jester right in the front leg just about halfway through the ride, and while the cut itself ended up not being a big deal in the

Random Things

Lots of things have been going on around here, but I have been too busy to blog! LOL!

First of all, Reva had a reaction to her spring shots. Poor baby. :( She felt horrible and all I could keep thinking was how much better she would feel if she could lie on the couch and have a Popsicle! LOL! She had her shots on Thursday and by Friday afternoon when I returned home from work, she had a fever of 103.2. Famous last words of my vet....I ask him if we ought to space the vaccines, since I have no idea how she might react. "Oh, she'll be fine. Young horses normally have no issues and she is a big horse anyway..." SIGH Next year I will space them out. :P

A dose of Banamine brought the fever down to 100 within an hour or so (which is her normal temp). She was eating, drinking, pooping, etc. just fine, so I was not that worried. But still, she obviously felt like crap. I made a quick call to the vet, just to check in. The vet on call agreed that I should just monitor Reva at that point.

All day Saturday she was fine. We had the junior/senior prom that night (I am the prom advisor!) and though I left for many hours to deal with all that fun stuff, when I returned home after 1 AM, she was still fine.

Sunday morning, the fever came back at 103.1. UGGG. Another round of Banamine and she was fine again. Another check in with the vet. I knew she still was not 100%, but she was functioning normally, despite being a bit lethargic. Monday she was fine all day (and I even rushed home during lunch to check her!) and then the real test was Tuesday. Would the fever return? If so, I was planning to have the vet out at that point. Most times, a shot reaction would last 4-6 days. Thankfully on Tuesday she was still fine and actually bucked and snorted her usual routine when I let her out in the AM. WHEW! I knew right then that all was well.

Despite the fact that Reva was fine, I still worry when my horse (or kid!) is not feeling right. Such an awful feeling!

(Prom went well BTW. This was my second time as advisor...in past years before my time, kids would be gone by 10PM despite the fact that prom is over at 11PM. Last year, they stayed until 10:25ish, and I felt proud. This year??? We had to turn off the music at 11:10PM and tell them it was time to go!!! LOL! They loved it! Here I am, all dolled up....can you guess the theme????

And this week I am on vacation!!!!!!!! YAY! We don't go back until Tuesday, April 27!

Dreamy has been coming along well. I have been alternating dressage work with trail work and she seems happy. Lots of hill work and I can feel her becoming stronger. Her canter has been lovely.....but that right lead is still too unbalanced. :( We have a saddle fitting this week to tweak her dressage saddle, which is exciting!

Today I took out my cavaletti. I am so proud of the fact that instead of spending too much money on lumber and then having my dad build a couple of the wooden ones (which are nice, but what a pain to store, repaint, etc.), I was crafty and bought two sets of "Rail Razers" for $50 instead! I have tons of ground poles....and within a few minutes, I had four cavaletti!!!

I love these things! I wonder why the one on the far left looks so far away??? LOL! I measured it all out so carefully.....???? Oh well.

The funniest part was my son. He liked helping me set them up, and then announced, "MAMA! TRAIN ME!" LOL! So he jumped the cavelletti a few times and I caught his picture with my new iPhone! LOL!!!!

Not much else going on! Hoping to ride as much as I can this week. I also have to clip Dreamy's legs and pull her mane. WORST JOBS EVER!! I wish I could pay someone else to do it! LOL!!! But it is time to clean her up for the show season. :)

  1. We space our shots - we do our 5-way and W Nile on one visit and then several weeks later the rabies and strangles - it's the rabies that sometimes makes the horses feel bad, in my experience. Glad all is well again!
