She's Not a Baby Anymore!

Early spring saw some immediate changes in how Ellie carried herself and our dressage work started to truly improve.  There had been times last year where flat work felt like a fight and I wondered to myself if she was ever going to just relax and listen to me haha.

Thankfully, as the title suggests, Ellie has suddenly grown up in front of my eyes.  We have had some really stellar lessons lately, where I feel like I am suddenly able to make things click.  We also had an incredibly frustrating dressage lesson a few weeks ago where Ellie was in rip-roaring peeing heat (not normal for her) and we worked through 45 minutes of her refusing to bend right.  So, ya know, as much as she is improving, she is still an opinionated redheaded mare!  ;-)

But, I have to give her credit because she is really working her little butt off for me!  Sadly, I had not been able to schedule in a jump lesson before our first three-phase, which led to me riding her ridiculously backward at a slow trot the entire …

2011 SPHO-NJ Banquet

This past Sunday, February 19 was the Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization's banquet.  I flew to NJ with my friend Tania and overall it was a good trip.  Both my mares won a few National awards!

Dreamy
~ Champion Combined Training
(ribbon plus a big plate trophy)
~ Champion Demos Award
(ribbon plus another big plate trophy)
~ Reserve Champion Dressage
(ribbon plus a small glass trophy)

Reva
~ Reserve Champion Rookie Horse
(ribbon plus a big purple glass bowl trophy)
~ 5th Overall High Point Horse
(a pretty neck sash!)

Reva also won a few thirds, fourths, fifths, and sixth places in In-Hand, Dressage, Hunter, Showmanship, 2-Gait, and Equitation but SPHO-NJ now only pins champion and reserve champion (which was news to me).  It was a bit of a trick to get the four breakable trophies home on the plane, but I did it!  Yay!

Dreamy's demo award presented by Jeff Gregory
Dreamy's combined training award presented by Jimmy Giorgianni -  fifth consecutive year she has been champion!
Dreamy's dressage award presented by Jimmy Giorgianni
Reva's rookie award presented by Rob Pennington
Reva's 5th place overall neck sash presented by Rob Pennington.  I totally thought I had walked away without posing for a pic!  Love it!  :-)  (And thanks to Vicki for posting it on my FB wall!)
Red carpet pics with Tania!  LOL!

Dancin'!!  LOL!
Thank you Vicki Wright!  The photos are awesome!!!  :-)

There were around 192 people at the banquet, which was crazy!  Many big names in the harness racing world now come to it, which is neat.  These are the people who donate big bucks to the club (The live auction alone raised almost $10,000!!!!  Nice!) compared to someone like me who struggled to donate just $90 between an ad in the banquet book and a few tickets in the 50/50 drawing and Chinese auction.  I try, but I am a poor teacher!  LOL!  ;-D

Speaking of the Chinese auction, I won two sets of Back on Track no bow wraps and a dressage saddle pad!  Whooo!  Seriously, I have had ridiculously good luck lately in contests!  LOL!

SPHO-NJ did a wonderful job in many ways and I truly appreciate that they recognize Standardbreds for all that they accomplish!!  :-)

  1. Congrats! I hope to be as successful with Jet as you are with your two mares! I am interested in joining the SPHO of NJ and the National SPHO but i can't seem to find the difference between them... I don't want to be jipped for my money...what is the difference between the two? Which would be more beneficial to join?

    Thank in advance!

  2. Thank you Emily!

There is no National SPHO. SPHO NJ just divides their awards into two categories: NJ residents only and "National". Basically anyone can try for their "National" awards, but only folks who live in NJ can get the NJ awards AND the National awards. Does that make sense?

If you become a member of SPHO NJ you can then sign up for their National award program. It is an extra fee (and form) per horse. Then you get a form signed after each show and mail it down within 30 days to accumulate points.

If you want more details, send me an email! :-) I can explain it all to you.
