Wentworth Hunter Pace - June 6, 2021

After Margaret and I had such a fun time at the fall hunter pace, we opted to go again this spring! This time, while I rode Rejoice again, Margaret rode her horse Jester and had a friend ride Ladyhawke. All Kennebec Morgans!! Jester and Rejoice have the same dam and Jester and Lady share the same sire. Unfortunately instead of a lovely late spring day, we had one of the first intensely hot and humid days of the year. It was definitely a bummer, but the ride was mostly in the shade of the woods and we had a great time!  most of the fences were 3' coops but we found a small log and this hay to jump haha Until we didn't. 😑 We brought along a third friend who rode Margaret's older mare, Ladyhawke. She's a good rider but hasn't known Ladyhawke for very long and didn't realize how much of a cranky boss mare she could be at times. She kicked Jester right in the front leg just about halfway through the ride, and while the cut itself ended up not being a big deal in the

New Horse, Who Dis?

If you happen to follow my Instagram, you may have seen a new photo yesterday of a horse that looks an awful lot like Ellie, but it isn't Ellie!

It's her momma!
can you tell which one is Ellie and which is Rejoice??
Yes, it is true.  I now am the proud owner of Kennebec Rejoice, Ellie's dam.  To make a long story short, as Miss Gardiner, who owns Kennebec Morgan Farm, is now approaching 98 years old (!!!!), the managers have been placing the broodmares and selling the younger stock.  At this point, there are only three stallions left: Ellie's sire, who at age 25 will live out his days at the farm, a ten-year-old named Triple S Midnight, and a five-year-old named Kennebec Commander.  (So if you know anyone who wants a LOVELY breeding stallion, I can put you in touch!)
Rejoice was Not Impressed that she was in the ring all alone in the world,
aka her friends were fifty feet away and she could see them. *facepalm*
Most of the broodmares had been spoken for years ago by former employees and others who already own a Kennebec.  I had made it known that I would take in a broodmare if one needed a soft place to land.  One of the current farmworkers bought Rejoice this past spring and boarded her at KMF, but I made sure she was aware that I would take Rejoice if she ever needed to sell her.

I am kinda loving the orange ribbons Margaret put on her horses

Well, the text came in during the middle of August.  I was like OH EFF because I don't currently have a set up for three horses.  I also knew that I did NOT want Rejoice sold to just anyone (though I honestly don't think her previous owner would have just sold her off), but I wasn't having much luck finding a place to board her either.  I had hoped she could have lived at my lesson barn, but they are currently full until spring.

she's wearing Ellie's old bridle and bit, which I am now glad I did not sell haha

So, I just sort of waited it out and hoped something would work out.  Not the best method, but I had no other choices.

she's so cute and soooooooo much like Ellie!

Thank goodness, in October, my friend Margaret told me she could take Rejoice in for me!  I was so excited to hear this and long story short, we planned to move her on November 2.  I drove up to KMF to pick her up and took her to Margaret's farm. Rejoice had been there before, so she was already familiar with Margaret's horses and barn.  It actually is the perfect situation for now, until I can figure out what the heck to do in the spring.  I don't love paying board after having my horses home for nearly twenty years, but oh well haha.

Margaret lives a solid hour from me, so I was finally able to visit this past Sunday.  I had irrationally hoped Ellie's saddle would fit Rejoice, which is crazy because it is flocked and fitted to Ellie, and of course it wasn't right at all.  So after grooming and some groundwork, I hopped on bareback because I was determined to ride my new pony hahaha!
she is so friggin cute

So the saddle search is on, but it is not a huge rush since uhhh it's winter and it is not like I can get there a lot anyway.  My plans are pretty nonexistent for Rejoice, because at almost nineteen years old, she really doesn't owe anyone anything.  I think riding her a little would be fun and good for her little busy brain, but if she just hangs out and eats, that is fine with me as well.  She does need to lose some serious weight at the moment though haha.

I am waiting for her papers to come back from AMHA, but I am updated on the website as her current owner.  YAY!  I need another horse like a hole in the head hahaha.

  3. Wow - congrats - what a gorgeous mare!!! Is breeding her again an option? Then you'll have a horse to bring along as Ellie gets older! :-D She might be nice for the kids to hop on as well if they are interested. Regardless, you always need another horse, so I totally support this decision!!! :-)

    1. Thank you! She had a rough time with her last pregnancy (four years ago) and had complications after birth. So I am not sure I would want to try breeding her again. I would be devastated if something happened to her or the foal. But I have definitely thought of that idea! She is going to be a lot of fun and I am sure we will all enjoy riding her. She is a doll!

    1. Thank you! It is pretty cool and I can't wait to reunite them. They were turned out together in the same big field when I bought Ellie, so I am guessing they will bond again. Well, hopefully not bond tooooo much haha!

  5. Awww! Yay! And lol to the new-horse-like-a-hole-in-the-head comment. That's how I felt about Stan, but I also felt like I owed him a soft landing and he didn't owe me too much riding time. I'm so happy you're able to provide that for Rejoice!

    1. Exactly! I could not live with myself if I didn't take her in. I *knew* I would end up with her, which is weird to say, but I just had this gut feeling back when I bought Ellie.
